How Does It Work ?

When injecting botulinum toxin into a specific area, which is the trade name for botulinum toxin type A, it reversibly blocks nerve impulses from the nerves to the facial muscles of expression wrinkles. The muscles can not contract and therefore tend to relax. When muscles relax, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles continue to contract normally, allowing a persons facial expressions to remain unaffected.

What areas can be treated ?

Botulinum toxin is commonly performed in the upper face. The most common areas are the forehead, vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows, wrinkles at the corner of the eye (“crow’s feet“). It can also be used around the mouth and chin, with varying affects to the smile.

How is this done ?

The procedure is simple and safe. Botulinum toxin is injected with a fine needle into the desired area. Depending on the area treated 4-10 injections are necessary. Pain is minimal due to the use of fine needles and volume of liquid injected. No local anesthesia or sedation is required  and there is no down time. You can resume daily activities immediately. Very rarely, some patients may experience bruising or redness at the injection site, which can be covered with makeup.

How long does the effects of the treatment last ?

Full effect of botulinum toxin is not visible for 14 days. As mentioned the effects are temporary in that the toxin is slowly metabolized by the body in 3-4 months. Most patients are happy with the effects of botulinum toxin, a new injection will be required after this period to maintain the skin smoothing effects.

Every year

Thousands of patients receive treatment with botulinum toxin for many problems, but for 15 years has become a popular treatment to treat the signs of aging. Although, botulinum toxin treatment is use for removing wrinkles, recently has been used to combat excessive sweating of the armpits, hands and feet

Side effects ?

There are very few side effects. Allergic reactions, although they are rare, may occur. Droopy eyebrow can be avoided by injecting above 1 cm from the eyebrows. Despite these precautions, however, this problem may occur although is temporary lasting for 2-3 weeks. Are  you a suitable candidate?
Of course, only a consultation can determine this. Although botulinum toxin is tolerated by many patients,  pregnant and breast feeding women should not be treated.
Contraindications :
• an allergy to one of the components used in the preparation of the toxin, for example albumin
• disease that lowers overall muscle strength, such as Myasthenia Gravis
• during treatment with some antibiotics
• during treatment with corticosteroid anti-inflammatory drugs = increase the risk of bruising
• presence of local infection in the region to be treated;

Wrinkles and botulinum toxin

Wrinkles and skin folds are caused by contractions of delicate expression muscles whenever smiling, laughing or frowning. The more and more emotion we express, the deeper the lines and wrinkles will develop. Over time, constant and sustained contraction of these muscles can lead to permanent lines.

Using this substance

Botulinum toxin can improve the dynamic folds. The technique, which uses a purified toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, is called cosmetic denervation. Although the toxin is the same that causes a serious form of food poisoning, the amount used in cosmetic surgery is so small that there is no systemic or general reaction. Botulinum toxin has been used safely and successfully since 1982 by ophthalmologists to treat nervous blinking of the eyelids.
